If you’re in your 40s, eating well, and still noticing weight gain—you’re not imagining it. And it’s not just about willpower.
As we move through our 40s and into perimenopause, the body begins to change. Levels of Oestrogen fluctuate and gradually decline, which can affect how your body stores fat, regulates appetite, and uses energy.
At the same time, from around the age of 30, we naturally begin to lose muscle mass—typically at a rate of around 3–8% per decade. This process can speed up during perimenopause.
Less muscle means a slower metabolism. So even if you’re eating the same way you always have, your body may be burning fewer calories than it used to.
That’s why things can suddenly feel harder.
Why Strength Training Is Key in Your 40s
When it comes to improving body composition, supporting your metabolism, and maintaining strength as you age, strength training is one of the most effective tools you have.
The foundations I recommend time and time again are simple:
- ✅ A well-balanced, nutrient-dense diet
- ✅ Regular strength training—especially lifting weights
Cardio absolutely has its place, and mobility and flexibility matter too. But if your goal is fat loss, muscle tone, and long-term health, strength training is the key.
